Lycogala epidendrum

Mature sporocarps

Lycogala epidendrum is a common species throughout the UK. It can be found growing on dead wood, most often on the upper surface in exposed locations. Lycogala terrestre is a very similar species, having the same habit and outward appearance. The major differences between the two are that Lycogala epidendrum has a red plasmodium and grey spores when fresh and Lycogala terrestre has an orange plasmodium and pink spores when fresh.
